Mating assistance when natural breeding isn’t possible.
Artificial Insemination (herein referred to as AI) is the process of collecting the sperm from the male and manually inseminating the bitch. This has become widely used in the dog breeding world as it gives us the opportunity to evaluate the sperm for quality and viability before inseminating the bitch. It also ensures that all sperm reaches its goal since natural matings can sometimes result in no tie (or a slip mating).
Some bitches will not allow themselves to be mated naturally, just as some males are not always willing to oblige. AI takes away the stress of repeated unsuccessful matings resulting in lowered sperm count and, in some cases, other complications affecting the male’s fertility.
Some stud dog owners will not allow their stud dogs to mate naturally and insist on AI. It has its benefits - less stress on the bitch and stud, less likelihood of sexually transmitted infections, opportunity to evaluate the sperm before insemination, ensuring the full collection of sperm is deposited right where it needs to be and it saves time.
All equipment used in the course of AI is sterile.
